James Mallory Frey Deemas

James Mallory Frey Deemas, was born in San Diego, California, August 12, 1934. His ancestry is international: On his mother’s side Greek, French and Scottish and on his father’s side Lebanese and English.

 

As a child biology was of interest, evidenced by he and his brother bringing home one day a jar full of black widow spiders that they had captured scurrying around in some enormos drainage pipes. They could have gotten bitten or drowned, but Providence was with them.

 

As an adolescent there was an incident that indicated he might have some talent as a writer. He was insenced when the High School English teacher implied that he had copied for a homework paper. The teacher said, “Did you really write that?” Some guy in the back of the room piped up, “Yeah, sometimes he talks that way.”

 

After graduation he worked for eight years in Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, then at the University of Rhode Island. That was when he learned computer programming, cutting his teeth on IBM 360 assembler. He has been in computing on and off since then.

 

In 1971 he moved to Mexico. He worked as a teacher (English, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics and Computing), programmer and in Computer department management. He also became a Catholic and married.

 

In 2020 he learned phenomenological meditation during spiritual exercises. In this meditation one places himself within a biblical scene, imagining all the details that color one’s experience: what people are doing or saying, whether the air is hot and sweaty or cold, sounds (murmuring or a dog barking or just noise), how close you are to Jesus, what He looks like, etc. He started writing short stories based on these experiences. He also does translations of religious texts from Spanish to English. The books that he publishes consist of these stories and translations.
